What does the over/under - total bet mean?

The world of betting is a set of techniques, terms, methods and options to be tamed if the objective is to make long-term gains. It will be necessary for any bettor, beginner or professional, to identify, test and adequately put into practice "his strategy". Today, we will talk about one in particular. It consists in betting more or less on the number of possible goals/points in a match.

What is Over/Under? Explanations

The Over and the Under or total bet as you will have understood are two terms meaning respectively more and less. This technique is one of the essential sports betting concepts to know. These are two traditional options found at most bookmakers. The principle is simple, a grid of possible numbers of goals/points is proposed and it is up to the bettor to predict more or less accurately this number.

The objective is not to find the exact number of goals/points that will be scored in a sports match. For the over, you just need the teams to score more goals/points than the approximation you made. The opposite of under, where teams will have to score less. No ambiguity, betting sites count in half points or half goals.

How does over/under work?

Example

As mentioned above, bookmakers count in half points/half goals, but also in full points and full goals. In practice, the grid is as follows in football:

Over 0.5 Under 0.5
0 goal Lost Won
1 goal or + Won Lost
Over 1 Under 1
0 goal Lost Won
1 goal Refunded Refunded
2 goals or + Won Lost
Over 1.5 Under 1.5
0 goal Lost Won
1 goal Lost Won
2 goals or + Won Lost

Classic handicap

Let's take the example of three possible outcomes in a match: a win for team A (favourite), a draw and a win for team B (underdog). Here are our tips for emerging victorious.

Note that this is an example. According to the example above, if in football you choose the over 1 goal option between team A and team B, at the end of the match there must be at least two goals in the match for the bet to win. If there is only one goal, your initial stake will be returned (refund). You will also need 2 goals if you choose the over 1.5 option. In the case of options with half goals, no refund is possible. If there is only one goal at the end of the match, your bet is lost. The principle is the same for the under option. If the match ends with less goals than you predicted in your bet (less than 2 goals if you took the under 2.5 option).

In which sports are these options available?

Over/under options (total bets) tend to spread quite quickly. As a result, almost all bookmakers have included them on their sites. It is now possible to place over/under options on almost all sports (football, basket-ball, rugby, ice hockey, American football...). In tennis too, it is possible to bet with the over/under options on the number of games, points and sets possible during a match.
