How to win with handicap betting?

In order to establish a winning streak when playing sports betting, it is essential to know all the betting options and their meaning. In a match between a favourite and an underdog, the first thought is that you have to bet on the favourite to win your bet. This is not quite true as there is an option to place a bet on the underdog and still win. This is called handicap betting. Follow the explanation in the 'essentials' section of the bettor's guide to better understand what it is.

How does handicap betting work?

Handicap betting: explanations

To start, handicap betting is an option found at bookmakers that allows you to virtually rebalance an event. This strategy takes the form of points or goals, and can be used to disadvantage or advantage one of the two teams. These are techniques that more or less secure your options.

This event allows you to win in sports betting with all sports where the difference between the two sides can be measured. In handball, football and ice hockey for example, the handicap is in number of goals. In baseball, basketball and rugby, it is in points. In tennis and volleyball it is expressed in number of sets.

How to win a handicap bet?

As said above, handicap betting is a method of adding or subtracting points, goals or sets to one of the competitors. Here are some examples of possible payouts with a classic handicap.

Classic handicap

Let's take the example of three possible outcomes in a match: a win for team A (favourite), a draw and a win for team B (underdog). Here are our tips for emerging victorious.

  • If you bet on Team A to win at odds of 2.35 with a handicap (-2.0), they will have to overcome the handicap you impose on them in order to pass your bet and make you win money. Team A must score more goals than team B even if they are subtracted 2 goals. In other words, team A must score at least 3 goals. Example: Team A wins 3-0; 4-1; 5-2.
  • If you choose a draw with odds of 3.50 and a handicap (-2), your bet will only be won if the favourite team (A) is given 2 goals and the score of the match becomes a draw. Example: Team A wins 2-0; 3-1; 4-2. After subtracting 2 goals, the match is a draw.
  • If you bet on Team B winning with a handicap (+2) and the odds are 1.95, you can only expect to win if Team B's score (after adding 2 goals) is higher than Team A's. Example: the bet wins if there is a draw, if Team B only loses 1-0, or Team B wins by 1-0 or more.
