The preliminary analysis

First, it is important for you to know the competition and its history. As with all sports betting, statistics are very useful in guiding your decisions. There are some statistics you should know, for example:

  • Al Ahly is the record holder in terms of number of titles won. It won its tenth title in 2021. It is also the club with the highest number of participations, 25.

Secondly, you need to be sufficiently informed about the clubs and their backgrounds. At club level, you also need to have an idea of the importance of each player. Indeed, during a match, the absence of certain players can really weigh on the balance and impact the final result. That's why before making your predictions, you should for example check the list of injured players, players who have received cards, etc. For example, so far the top scorer in the CAF Champions League is Mohamed Aboutrika with 31 goals. In any case, preliminary analysis is very important when it comes to sports betting.

Highlights of the CAF Champions League

This competition was called the African Champions Cup. It is an initiative of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) which began in 1964. It takes place every year and brings together the best football clubs on the continent. The club that wins the competition one year automatically receives a ticket to the following year's competition.

The very first edition of the CAF Champions League, the 1965 edition, was won by Cameroon and more precisely its club Oryx Douala. In 1979, Union Douala of Cameroon won its first title. West and Central Africa made their mark on the CAF Champions League in the 1970s. The following decade was mainly marked by the victory of clubs from North Africa.

It was in 1997 that the competition was named the CAF Champions League. Over the years, the format of the game has changed. For example, the final match has become unique since 2020. The final match of the 2020 edition was played by two clubs from the same country, a first in the history of the CAF Champions League. It was two Egyptian clubs and the match was won by Al Ahly. It was again the winner of the 2021 edition, making it its tenth victory since the beginning of the competition.

What are the rules of the CAF Champions League?

The rules of the CAF Champions League were slightly modified in 1997 when the competition was renamed after the European model. The defending club is immediately qualified for the competition. The top twelve associations in the CAF ranking propose two teams for the Champions League while the others are allowed to propose only one.

Since 2020, the final match is a one-off, while all other matches are still played in a two-legged format. If the two sides are tied, the number of away goals scored by each is taken into account. If they are still tied, a penalty shoot-out is held. The knockout matches are won by the clubs with the highest total number of goals.

There are indeed two qualifying rounds for the CAF Champions League. Only the winners of the second round are allowed to play the group matches. The losers of the second qualifying round are sent to the Confederation Cup.

The group matches are played by 16 clubs. There are usually four groups, each consisting of four clubs. Clubs in the same group must all play each other in a two-legged match. The quarter-finals are played between the top two clubs in each group, i.e. eight clubs. The stadium to host the final is chosen beforehand, as was the case in the first edition in 1965. The winner will have to meet the holder of the Confederation Cup - this match is called the CAF Supercup. The winner of the CAF Champions League also has the opportunity to go to the FIFA Club World Cup.
